ALKA CHARITABLE CENTER is a non-profit, charitable organization operating in Haridwar, India. It was established on January 1, 1997 in memory of the Founder's late daughter, Alka Rani Kulshreshtha.
The Charity offers educational assistance to academically interested students whose families are too poor to continue to support their education. The mission of the Charity is to provide the support necessary to enhance the quality of its student’s lives. The Founders believe this objective is best met through a solid education.
To prevent misuse of the Charity, all prospective students must meet the selection criteria:
- Come from a family of limited finances.
- Possess a satisfactory academic record at a recognized school.
- Be in good and stable health.
To receive the Alka Charitable Scholarship, these students must pass a competency test for their level of study. This test must be passed each year the student applies for assistance. The scholarship consists of:
- Tuition fees paid directly to the school
- Textbooks
- Stationary
- One school uniform
Those who fail, yet are academically interested, are encouraged to attend daily tutorial classes offered at the Center in Vishnu Garden or at C.N. Junior High School in Kharkhari. This is part of Alka Charitable Center’s “Education Development Program,” which is available to those students who meet selection criteria. We charge a nominal Rs.10 (~20 cents) to prevent misuse of our services.
Tutorial sessions in English, Mathematics, and Science as well as Micro- computer at the center are running well.
For those students who live far away, the Charity also offers transportation to drive them to and from the Center.
In addition to the tutorial sessions, every Sunday, the center offers sewing, knitting, embroidery and cooking classes. These are essential skills in Indian society and such programs help to make the Charity’s students well rounded.
